Chanson: Les Nubians - Makeda

Bonjour! Aujourd'hui, une chanson!

Je suis sûre que n'avez pas oublié Les Nubians, ces brillantes chanteuses -et même (and even) auteures*-compositrices-interprètes (singer-song+music writers) qui nous ont offert (who offered us) de magnifiques titres (=singles)  à la fin des années 90. Talentueuses représentantes de la Soul française, elles ont pourtant (however) connu plus de succès aux États-Unis que dans leur propre pays (than in their own country).

La bonne nouvelle? Elles sont de retour! (They are back!)

Lyrics | Les Nubians lyrics - Makeda lyrics
NB: In this transcription, a few accents were forgotten, and there is a typo: "Ll" should be read "Il"

Voici une traduction assez littérale de la chanson -Attention: c'est du mot pour mot, pas une tentative de adaptation poétique! Here's a rather literal translation of the song -Disclaimer: it's word for word, not a poetic adaptation!

One wants to make us believe in lost myths
Parts of history are corrupted and re-examined
From Ramses to Mandela, so many unspoken truths
By being unaware of the beginnings, one wanders without goal
- Makeda was queen, beautiful and powerful
Solomon dreamed of her black skin
I sing to revive the memories
To exhume the knowledge
That the spiral of time erases
The Queen of Sheba lives in me, Makeda lives in me.
Let us revive our memory
History has to be changed
It is drifting away, the drift of words
Knowledge and wisdom are within reach
Listen and observe
- Makeda...
My people dance and sing, they "exult" their joy
Far from ignorance, they show their faith
Rich with men and values, they will repair the errors
Sons and daughters, you and me, ready for the fight

I must credit Concrete Rose for the translation, that I tweaked to make it more literal.
Voici une biographie, en français (pas très actuelle)
Et bien sûr, le site des Nubians!

*NB: "auteur" au féminin peut s'orthographier "auteure".
